What missing starters have actually meant
We checked every regular-season game since 2015 with a posted closing line — 3,044 games, 6,088 team-games — and cut them by how many starters each team had ruled Out on the weekly report. “Covers” is how often that team beat the closing spread; “vs spread” is its average margin against the number.

Read it plainly: a team down two or more starting linemen has run about a field goal under the spread, and the total has leaned under, not over. Three defenders out nudges the total up by about a point — real, but small. In every case the sportsbook has already moved the number most of the way, which is why none of this is a pick.
