Probable means from recent starts, not team-confirmed: we take the rostered goalie with the most starts in his team's last ten games and leave out anyone on the injury report. Each game above lists both clubs' probable starters. We take the goalie on the current roster with the most starts in the team's last ten games and skip any goalie on the injury report. Teams confirm their starter after the morning skate, so treat these as probable until then.
When do NHL teams confirm their starting goalie?
Most clubs name their starter after the morning skate, usually late morning Eastern for a 7 p.m. game. Some coaches wait until warmups, where the goalie who leads the team onto the ice is normally the starter. Late switches are rare, but an illness or a tweak in warmups does happen.
Does the backup goalie start on back-to-backs?
Often. Most NHL teams give the backup one game of a back-to-back, frequently the second night or the road game. This page flags any probable starter who played the night before, because that is when the goalie listed here is most likely to sit and the backup to start instead.
Why does the starting goalie matter for betting?
The goalie is the biggest single swing in a hockey game. The gap between a .915 starter and a .895 backup is about 0.6 goals on 30 shots, enough to move a moneyline and a total. Saves props belong to the goalie named, so a late switch changes the bet entirely.
