How Often Do NHL Players Score? The Anytime Goal Scorer Numbers

An anytime goal bet asks one question: does he score at least once? Three regular seasons of NHL box scores — 141,675 skater games from 2023-24 to 2025-26 — answer it by position, role, shot volume and scoring rate, and the price each answer is worth.

1. The Short Answer: 15.1%

A skater scored at least once in 21,351 of 141,675 regular-season games, or 15.1%. It is one of the steadiest numbers in hockey: 15.1% in 2023-24, 14.9% in 2024-25 and 15.2% in 2025-26.

Teams averaged 3.06 goals a game, spread across 2.71 different scorers, so on a typical night five or six of the roughly 36 skaters dressed score. Two-goal games are rare: 11.3% of the games in which a skater scored had a second goal, and there were 287 hat tricks in three seasons. Home skaters scored a little more often than road skaters, 15.5% to 14.6%.

2. Position and Role

Forwards scored in 19.2% of their games and defensemen in 7.0%. Within the forwards, role is the bigger split. Ranking each team's dressed forwards by their average ice time over the previous ten games, the six with the most scored in 26.0% of their games and the bottom six in 12.4% — double the rate, before anything about the matchup.

Ice time carries power-play time with it, and the power play is where a fifth of the scoring happens: 19.9% of the 24,069 goals skaters scored were power-play goals. A forward on the first unit gets a share of those that a fourth-liner never sees.

3. Shot Volume Is Most of It

About one shot on goal in ten went in (10.6%). So the simplest predictor of scoring is shooting, and it sorts players cleanly. By a skater's average shots on goal over his previous ten games:

Shots per game, last 10GamesScored
Under 129,7057.0%
1 to 261,74113.0%
2 to 329,04122.6%
3 to 48,60631.1%
4 or more1,71037.7%

A player averaging four or more shots scored in 37.7% of his next games, more than five times the rate of one averaging under a shot. The averages use only games before the one counted, so this is information a bettor has before puck drop. For the shots market itself, see NHL shots on goal props.

4. Proven Scorers Score — About 40% of the Time

By a skater's goals per game over his previous 82 games (20 or more played):

Goals per game, last 82GamesScored
Under 0.1044,0706.6%
0.10 to 0.2033,92213.8%
0.20 to 0.3021,60820.7%
0.30 to 0.4012,02527.4%
0.40 to 0.506,31033.1%
0.50 or more3,15039.2%

The top row is the league's elite finishers, and they scored in 39.2% of their games. The skater with the most goals on his team so far that season scored in 33.5% of his next games (6,059 games). That is the ceiling of this market: no one is a better-than-even bet to score in a given night, and a 35% chance is a strong number, not a weak one.

5. The Odds Each Chance Is Worth

Because the chances are low, anytime goal bets are almost always plus money, and the price decides whether a good read is a good bet. The break-even price for each probability:

Chance to scoreBreak-even odds
15%+567
20%+400
25%+300
30%+233
35%+186
40%+150
45%+122

A top scorer offered at +150 is priced as a 40% chance before the book's margin — above what even the half-a-goal-a-game group managed. At +233 a 30% chance only breaks even. Compare your number with the price, not the player's name; the expected value guide has the arithmetic.

6. How Our Model Uses This

Our anytime goal model is a classifier fit on about two and a half of those seasons. Its 19 inputs follow the tables above: the skater's goals over his last five and ten games and this season, how often he has scored at all, his shots, points, hits and ice time, his power-play goals, games played, home or away, rest and back-to-backs, position, and the opponent's goals and shots allowed over their last ten. Its probability is calibrated: across 9,689 archived player-games, skaters it put at 30 to 35% scored 34.1% of the time.

The graded play is every skater the model gives a 30% or better chance to score, settled against the official box score; a scratched skater is no result. The rule started on October 15, 2026. Replayed over the archived predictions before that, it scored 224 times in 640 picks (35.0%) — a mid-30s record is what this market looks like, and the live one is on the performance page. Tonight's probabilities are on the NHL anytime goal scorer board.

7. Frequently Asked Questions

How often does an NHL player score a goal in a game?

In about 15 games out of 100. Over 141,675 regular-season skater games from 2023-24 to 2025-26, a skater scored at least once in 15.1% of them, and the rate barely moved between seasons (14.9% to 15.2%). Forwards scored in 19.2% of their games, defensemen in 7.0%.

How often does the best goal scorer on a team score?

About one game in three. The skater with the most goals on his team so far that season scored in 33.5% of his next games, over 6,059 games. Players who had scored half a goal a game or more over their previous 82 games scored in 39.2% of their next games.

Do shots on goal predict anytime goal scorers?

Strongly. Skaters who averaged under one shot over their previous ten games scored in 7.0% of their next games; those averaging four or more scored in 37.7%. Across the league about one shot on goal in ten went in (10.6%), so volume is most of the story.

What odds make an anytime goal scorer bet worth it?

The price has to be longer than the break-even for your probability. A 25% chance breaks even at +300, 30% at +233, 35% at +186 and 40% at +150. A top scorer offered at +150 is priced at a 40% chance, which is above what even elite scorers have managed.

How many goals come on the power play?

About one in five. Of 24,069 goals by skaters over three regular seasons, 19.9% were power-play goals. That is why first-unit power-play time matters for an anytime goal bet: it concentrates a fifth of the league’s scoring on four or five players per team.
